In 1975 the Western Isles Council set up"Bilingual Education Project" with the aim of increasing the provision of Gaelic teaching and materials in primary schools.
An approach was made to An Comunn Gaidhealach, the Highlands and Islands Development Board, Comhairle nan Eilean and the Highland Regional Council with the suggestion that they form the shareholding base of a publishing company whose main, although not sole, aim was to provide Gaelic texts for use in Gaelic medium education.
And so Acair was born.

Gradually over the years the range of titles published by Acair has evolved. We still publish education titles but these are now done alongside general Gaelic titles for children as well as English, Gaelic and bilingual titles for adults.
We have an extensive back list of over 300 titles and although we are publishing more in English we still retain the policy that at least 50% of our publications are Gaelic.

Looking to the future Acair are keen to carry on producing quality Scottish books and in order to do that we are keen to promote talent from the Western Isles in particular and Scotland in general.
So, watch this space as the story of Acair continues to unfold.
